Grades K-2. Comparing and Measuring introduces key skills students need to make sense of their lives and to successfully conduct experiments. Unit develops the skills of comparison, matching, and measuring. Students begin by comparing their heights, then matching their height to others in class using strips of adding machine tape. Students test a series of measurement experiments using nonstandard units, such as their own feet, and discover that nonstandard units produce unreliable results.
Grades K-2. Comparing and Measuring introduces key skills students need to make sense of their lives and to successfully conduct experiments. This unit develops the skills of comparison, matching, and measuring. Students begin by comparing their heights, then matching their height to others in the class using strips of adding machine tape. Students test a series of measurement experiments using nonstandard units, such as their own feet, and discover that nonstandard units produce unreliable results. Students measure height, width, and distance, this time using Unifix® cubes and measuring strips to represent standard units of measure. These activities develop student understanding of fair comparisons, starting and ending points, common starting lines, and standard units of measure.
