BeginningEasy to perform; requires little or no prior knowledge.
Designed for a middle or early high school course, the Monohybrid Genetics with Corn Kit is an excellent introduction to the foundations of Mendelian genetics. Students go hands-on with genetic corn ears that demonstrate Mendelian genetic ratios.
To examine the inheritance of a single pair of alleles, one of which is dominant and the other recessive, students score the phenotypes of F2 purple:yellow (R/r) corn ears and compare their data to their predictions. An additional optional chi-square activity provides an opportunity for teachers to further challenge their students with statistical analysis, as recommended for pre-AP® and college preparatory classes.
Looking to cover dihybrid traits as well? Consider our Carolina BioKits®: Corn Dihybrid Genetics (item #176380).
