Grades 9-12. These hands-on, inquiry-based laboratory activities introduce students to the periodic table through an exploration of elements and their properties. Students first investigate periodic trends, such as atomic mass, electron configuration, and oxygen bonding ratio, through guided inquiry of the periodic table. Then they use these trends and the properties of elements to design their own periodic arrangement.
Students practice the predictive nature of the table and graph periodic properties to visualize the trends of atomic radius, ionization energy, and electromagnetivity. Materials are sufficient for 32 students working in pairs.
