Catalyze learning with this colorful demonstration. Students observe the oxidation of tartrate ions by hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a cobalt catalyst by monitoring the color changes. They learn the impact a catalyst has on reaction rate and observe that the catalyst is regenerated at the end of the reaction. Use this teacher-led, student-engaged demonstration in studies of catalysis, kinetics, oxidation states, and redox reactions. This demonstration requires approximately 15 min and kit materials are sufficient for 5 demonstrations.
