Product Highlights
  • Carolina Kits 3D®—Labs that use phenomena to support NGSS and 3D instruction
  • Meets the following NGSS Performance Expectations: HS-PS1-2 & HS-PS1-3
  • Includes FREE digital resources for teacher and student instructional support
(in stock)

Description

Product Details

  • Observe the difference between ionic, covalent, and polar covalent bonds and use electronegativity data to classify bonds by type.
  • High school laboratory investigation with enough materials for 8 lab groups.
  • Carolina Kits 3D®—Labs that use phenomena to support NGSS and 3-dimensional instruction.

Students propose a data analysis plan for information received from the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover based on patterns present in the physical properties of ionic and covalent compounds. Students will work toward answering the driving question, “How can you make and defend a claim about the types of chemical bonds in compounds based on the patterns present in evidence collected in the lab about their physical properties?”

Time Requirement
Total, 200 minutes. Teacher prep, 30 minutes. Pre-lab, 40 minutes. Investigation 1, 50 minutes. Investigation 2, 50 minutes. Assessment, 30 minutes.

Digital Resources
Includes 1-year access to digital resources that support 3-dimensional instruction for NGSS. Digital resources may include a teacher’s manual and student guide, pre-lab activities and setup videos, phenomenon videos, simulations, and post-lab analysis and assessments.

Engaging in Argument from Evidence

Learning Objectives

  • Use the periodic table of electronegativity to predict whether a substance's chemical bonds are ionic, polar covalent, or nonpolar covalent.
  • Analyze and interpret data on the properties of unknown substances to classify them as ionic or covalent compounds.
  • Observe patterns of the properties of substances at the macro scale to provide evidence for the type of bonding at the atomic scale.

Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills
Students should be familiar with the structure of the atom, the significance of valence electrons, and the organization of the periodic table.
