In this teacher-led demo, you'll combine a dry luminol mixture with water to produce a beautiful blue glow. The demo not only sparks discussion about chemiluminescence and electron energy levels, it also simulates presumptive blood testing in forensics labs. The demonstration requires approximately 15 min, and materials are sufficient for 5 demos.

Students explore how critical discoveries shaped and modified modern atomic theory. They use models to describe atomic structure, learn how to use different atomic representations, and practice writing the electron configuration of an element. Kit activities require 3 to 4 days of classroom time but can be split up and assigned to different student groups to reduce time. Kit materials are sufficient for at least 30 students working in groups.
